I was so excited when I visited your store on Voss. I am a Science Educator and have a passion for plants . Since I was a kid it has been a love that I shared with my grandmother. The first plant that my grandmother bought me was a bird of paradise plant. I was 5 years old. I went on to work in nurseries in Louisiana putting myself through college. I loved working in the conservatory on Jefferson Island, Louisiana . So many years later the passion is still within me. The bird of paradise plant has been divided and shared with family and friends and it is the one plant on my highrise balcony that weathered the hard freeze weeks ago. I love your nursery and all the sales people who make me feel like family.. and that in itself gives me great joy.

I read in Calloway’s Annual Guide , that April 3rd is “Perennial Swap Day” at selected stores. I would very much like the Hulen Street Store to participate so that I can swap out some begonia’s, narissis, and pothos ivy, all that have just been potted and ready to swap out for something you have to swap.

Melyssa, Calloway's Marketing Manager Reply:

Hello Dee,
The Hulen St. location will be participating. Please learn more about the April 3, 2010 Perennial Swap here: http://mytexasgarden.com/?page_id=208
We look forward to seeing you there.

2 weeks ago, pesticide was used to treat fire ants on 4 spots (mounds) in our 12′ x 14′ garden. Can we go ahead with tilling & planting? Should something else be done first? thank you, for any suggestions ;)
Beth D.

PlantMaster Reply:

Beth, you should be OK, but just realize that you’ve probably only encouraged them to move somewhere else. And that by treating these mounds there is no guarantee that they won’t just make more mounds elsewhere in your garden.

The Dairy Ashford Store is such a joy to visit. This store has been there for the longest time and my late Mother used to love shopping at this Cornelius location. I go there and revisit my Mom’s favorite plants. THANK YOU for keeping this store heritage Cornelius!

I’m building a special garden in my Mom’s memory and you are a big part of that!

Thanks!

Hi GK, We were unable to hold a fall plant swap, but plan to have swaps again in 2011. Please check back when the date has been determined.

I have a double purple Rose of Sharon bush that is approximately six years old. It’s in the way of a future outdoor fireplace. Can it possibly be moved? What are the chances of survival?

PlantMaster Reply:

Hi Lisa. Yes, it can be moved successfully, but the best time for this would be during its dormant period in Winter. If you decide to do this, dig the new planting area before moving the plant. Dig a large enough area around the plant so that you can remove as much of the root system as you can and still lift the plant. Once lifted from the ground, place it in a container or onto some burlap or other conveyance for moving. Move it carefully to the new site and avoid disturbing the root ball. Remove the container or fabric, place the plant in its new location so that the previous root ball is about 2-3 inches above the surrounding soil level, fill back with the soil that was removed from the new planting location and mound around the top of the root ball. Firm around the root ball to remove air pockets, mulch on top to prevent erosion and water it in. Once you see new growth emerging next Spring, you can feed it with a blooming plant fertilizer or a Hibiscus fertilizer.

Do I need to print off and show the email to the employees to get the special prices quoted in the Garden Club newsletter?

amin Reply:

Hi Shay,
No, you do not need to print special Garden Club Member pricing, you only need to print coupons.

When is the best time to plant colorful fall flowers?

PlantMasterSeptember 27th, 2010 at 12:48 pm

Pansies and other Fall and Winter annuals can be planted now since it has cooled off. Pansies are great for sunny areas and for shady areas you can plant Cyclamen. For parties or quick color, Garden Mums are great for sunny areas.

Are there any upcoming events/clinics in november and/or December at the Calloway’s in Southlake? I see you have a Christmas event in Houston. Thank you.

Hi Corrina, that is a great question. We do not have any more events scheduled for 2010 in DFW. We will update our calendar with new events in 2011.

I wish there were a store participating in the plant swap closer to where I live (Lewisville/Flower Mound) as Plano is too far for me.

admin Reply:

Hi Cindy, thank you for your comment. We try to choose central locations so that more customers are able to make the drive. We also rotate which location each year, we will keep Lewisville and Flower Mound in mind for next year. Sincerely, Kara

CindyJanuary 21st, 2011 at 9:33 am

Have you thought about organizing a Florist course. That is something lacking in the Dallas area. Have checked everywhere. Would love to study the art of floral arrangement.

Hi Valerie, Thank you for your suggestion. We will consider that for the future.
